Yang Sun (CHN)Dominating the longest event of the programme since 2011, Yang Sun (CHN) was the predictable winner of the 1500m free. The only possible question remaining was: will he get close to his own World Record of 14:31.02 established in the Olympic final in London? The answer after the final was clear: no. Leaving most of the initiative to Ryan Cochrane from Canada, Sun managed his effort until the 1400m-mark and then applied some more vigour to clinch the gold in 14:41.15, roughly 10 seconds slower than one year ago in the British capital.

He couldn?t threat either his Championships record from Shanghai 2011, when he had swum in a WR time of 14:34.14. Finally, as Katie Ledecky (USA) among women, Sun manages to win in the same edition of the Championships the three longest free events of the programme, the 400m , 800m and 1500m (only Grant Hackett, from Australia, has done the same, in Montreal 2005).

The silver went precisely to Cochrane (14:4248), also second at the Games, while Gregorio Paltrinieri (ITA) was the bronze medallist in 14:45.37. It was his first success at this level ? the 18-year-old had been fifth at the Olympics and improved in Barcelona his personal best and record of Italy.

Even before the final, the surprise of the day was the elimination (11th) in the heats for Oussama Mellouli (TUN), the 2008 Olympic champion and bronze medallist in 2012.?

World Record: Yang Sun (CHN), 14:31.02 ? August 4, 2012 in London (GBR)
Championships Record: Yang Sun (CHN), 14:34.14 ? July 31, 2011 in Shanghai (CHN)
Best performance of the current season (since January 2013): Yang Sun (CHN), 14:41.15 ? August 4, in Barcelona (ESP)
2003-2011 winners in this event: 2003 ? Grant Hackett (AUS, 14:43.14); 2005 ? Grant Hackett (USA, 14:42.58); 2007 ? Mateusz Sawrymowicz (POL, 14:45.94); 2009 ? Oussama Mellouli (TUN, 14:37.28); 2011 ? Yang Sun (CHN, 14:34.14)
The best in this event (1. most victories or 2. fastest time): Grant Hackett (AUS, 1998, 2001, 2003 & 2005)
2012 Olympic podium: 1. Yang Sun (CHN, 14:31.02), 2. Ryan Cochrane (CAN, 14:39.63), 3. Oussama Mellouli (TUN, 14:40.31)

Oil companies frack in coastal waters off Calif.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Companies prospecting for oil off California's coast have used hydraulic fracturing on at least a dozen occasions to force open cracks beneath the seabed, and now regulators are investigating whether the practice should require a separate permit and be subject to stricter environmental review.

While debate has raged over fracking on land, prompting efforts to ban or severely restrict it, offshore fracking has occurred with little attention in sensitive coastal waters where for decades new oil leases have been prohibited.

Hundreds of pages of federal documents released by the government to The Associated Press and advocacy groups through the Freedom of Information Act show regulators have permitted fracking in the Pacific Ocean at least 12 times since the late 1990s, and have recently approved a new project.

The targets are the vast oil fields in the Santa Barbara Channel, site of a 1969 spill that spewed more than 3 million gallons of crude oil into the ocean, spoiled miles of beaches and killed thousands of birds and other wildlife. The disaster prompted a moratorium on new drill leases and inspired federal clean water laws and the modern environmental movement.

Companies are doing the offshore fracking - which involves pumping hundreds of thousands of gallons of salt water, sand and chemicals into undersea shale and sand formations - to stimulate old existing wells into new oil production.

Federal regulators thus far have exempted the chemical fluids used in offshore fracking from the nation's clean water laws, allowing companies to release fracking fluid into the sea without filing a separate environmental impact report or statement looking at the possible effects. That exemption was affirmed this year by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, according to the internal emails reviewed by the AP.

Fracking fluids can comprise hundreds of chemicals - some known and others that aren't since they are protected as trade secrets. Some of these chemicals are toxins to fish larvae and crustaceans, bottom dwellers most at risk from drilling activities, according to government health disclosure documents detailing some of the fluids used off California's shore.

Marine scientists, petroleum engineers and regulatory officials interviewed by the AP could point to no studies that have been performed on the effects of fracking fluids on the marine environment. Research regarding traditional offshore oil exploration has found that drilling fluids can cause reproductive harm to some marine creatures.

"This is a significant data gap, and we need to know what the impacts are before offshore fracking becomes widespread," said Samantha Joye, a marine scientist at the University of Georgia who studies the effects of oil spills in the ocean environment.

The EPA and the federal agency that oversees offshore drilling, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement or BSEE, conduct some routine inspections during fracking projects, but any spills or leaks are largely left to the oil companies to report.

In a statement to the AP, the EPA defended its oversight of offshore fracking, saying its system ensures the practice does not pollute the environment in a way that would endanger human health. Oil companies must obtain permits for wastewater and storm water discharges from production platforms that "ensure all fluids used in the drilling and production process will not adversely impact water quality," the statement said.

Oil companies also say that much of the fracking fluid is treated before being discharged into the sea. Tupper Hull, spokesman for the Western States Petroleum Association, said fracking in general is safe and has "never been associated with any risk or harm to the environment" in over six decades in California.

California coastal regulators said they were unaware until recently that offshore fracking was even occurring, and are now asking oil companies proposing new offshore drilling projects if they will be fracking.

Because the area of concern is located more than three miles off the state's shoreline, federal regulators have jurisdiction over these offshore exploration efforts. However, the state can reject a permit in federal waters if the work endangers water quality.

"It wasn't on our radar before, and now it is," said Alison Dettmer, a deputy director at the California Coastal Commission.

Government documents including permits and internal emails from the BSEE reveal that fracking off the shores of California is more widespread than previously known. While new oil leases are banned, companies can still drill from 23 grandfathered-in platforms in waters where endangered blue and humpback whales and other marine mammals often congregate.

In March, a privately held oil and gas company received permission from the agency to frack some 10 miles off the Ventura County coast. The job by DCOR LLC involves using the existing wellbore of an old well to drill a new well. Three so-called "mini-fracks" will be done in an attempt to release oil locked within sand and rocks in the Upper Repetto formation.

Only a month before the application was approved, however, an official with the BSEE voiced concerns about the company's proposed frack and whether the operation would discharge chemicals into the ocean.

"We have an operator proposing to use `hydraulic stimulation' (which has not been done very often here) and I'm trying to run through the list of potential concerns," Kenneth Seeley, the BSEE's regional environmental officer for the Pacific, wrote in a Feb. 12 email to colleagues. "The operator says their produced water is Superclean! but the way they responded to my questions kind of made me think this was worth following up on."

BSEE officials approved DCOR's application on March 7. The agency told the AP that DCOR's job would use far less fracking fluid than an onshore operation.

"For comparison, well stimulation offshore typically uses 2 percent of the liquids and 7 percent of the sand that is used routinely for onshore hydraulic fracturing," the BSEE said in a statement.

Oil industry estimates show that at least half of the chemical-laced water used in fracking remains in the environment after an operation. Environmental groups say as much as 80 percent of the fluids can be left behind. The rest gets pumped back up to the oil platform, and is piped or barged back to shore for treatment. Companies can also pump the fluids into an old well reservoir to discard it.

DCOR, which did not respond to requests for comment, is not the first company to try to tap more oil from California's offshore reserves, nor is the project the most extensive offshore frack here in recent years.

In January 2010, oil and gas company Venoco Inc. set out to improve the production of one of its old wells with what federal drilling records show was the largest offshore fracking operation attempted in federal waters off California's coast. The target: the Monterey Shale, a vast formation that extends from California's Central Valley farmlands to offshore and could ultimately comprise two-thirds of the nation's shale oil reserves.

Six different fracks were completed during the project, during which engineers funneled a mix of about 300,000 pounds of fracking fluids, sand and seawater 4,500 feet beneath the seabed, according to BSEE documents.

Venoco's attempt only mildly increased production, according to the documents. Venoco declined to comment.

Despite greenlighting offshore fracking projects for years, federal and state regulators now are trying to learn more about the extent of fracking in the Pacific even as officials and marine scientists scramble to weigh the environmental effects.

In January, Jaron Ming, the Pacific regional director of the BSEE, told employees in an email that there had been heightened interest in offshore fracking from within the agency and the public.

"For that reason, I am asking you to pay close attention to any (drilling applications) that we receive and let me know if you believe any of them would be considered a `frac job.'"

That same month, BSEE estimated in internal emails that only two such jobs had occurred off California in the past two decades. But weeks later, as the agency worked to respond to public requests about fracking offshore, emails show it had found 12 such instances of offshore fracking.

BSEE said it cannot be sure just how often fracking has been allowed without going through every single well file.

Brian Segee, a staff attorney at the Environmental Defense Center, said the uncertainty makes him skeptical about the actual number of offshore fracks. The Santa Barbara-based environmental law firm, which formed in the wake of the 1969 oil spill, is calling for a moratorium on future fracking in the Pacific until the potential environmental effects are studied.

Most fracking efforts off California have yielded mixed results. The first time Venoco fracked offshore in the 1990s, it had limited success. Chevron's one try failed. Out of Nuevo Energy's nine attempts, only one was considered very successful, according to company and BSEE records.

The practice has been more fruitful in the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, where it's more common and the porous nature of the geologic formation makes it easier to extract oil, according to regulators and oil industry experts. Still, oil companies surveyed by federal regulators said they haven't ruled out fracking projects in the Pacific in the future.

As fracking technology evolves and companies seek to wring production from old offshore wells, drilling experts caution that strict safety precautions and planning are needed.

Working in the open ocean, "you have to be a lot more careful to avoid any spillage," said Mukul Sharma, a professor of petroleum engineering at The University of Texas at Austin.

David Pritchard, a Texas petroleum engineer who has been working in offshore drilling for 45 years, said offshore fracking "no doubt adds complexity and risk."

One concern is that the high pressure fracking mixture in some jobs might break the rock seal around an old well bore, allowing oil to escape, added another expert, Tulane University petroleum engineering professor Eric Smith.

"I'd say it (offshore fracking) is safe," Smith said, "but nothing's a sure thing in this world."

Gov. Rick Scott: Jackson should apologize for calling Florida "the Apartheid State"

It didn't take long for Florida's Republican leaders to lash out following comments made Tuesday by Rev. Jesse Jackson during his visit with the Dream Defenders at the Capitol.

Gov. Rick Scott asked that Jackson apologize for calling Florida the "Selma of our time" and "the Apartheid State."

"Jesse Jackson owes every Floridian an apology for his reckless and divisive comments," a release from Scott's office said Wednesday. "It is unfortunate that he would come to Florida to insult Floridians and divide our state at a time when we are striving for unity and healing. Floridians are a strong, resilient people. We are fortunate to live in a great state where all Floridians enjoy opportunities to get a great job and world class education."

Jackson, like the Dream Defenders, wants Florida to revisit the ?stand your ground? law that was passed in 2005 and has been blamed in a number of homicides. Scott?has said he supports the law and won?t call a special session to address the law.?

Jackson said Florida's post-Trayvon Martin environment was "toxic".

"Stand your ground laws must end," Jackson told reporters. "The manipulation of African-Americans here is disgraceful."

?We?ve seen Southern governors before change their minds,? Jackson said Tuesday. ?Wallace said we couldn?t go to the University of Alabama. he had to change his mind.?

Wallace is a reference to former Alabama governor George Wallace, who in 1963 famously stood in the door of Foster Auditorium at the University of Alabama to block the entry of two black students. In the late 1970s, he apologized to black leaders for his stance on segregation. In his final term as governor in 1983-1987, Wallace made a record number of black appointments.

Florida House Speaker? Will Weatherford?reacted strongly, as well. He objected to Jackson's comparison of Scott to Wallace. On Tuesday night, Weatherford tweeted this:

Will Weatherford ?@willweatherford16h

Rev. Jackson?s latest comments about @FLGovScott went too far. I am embarrassed for him and his irresponsible statement. #sayfie

It was retweeted 15 times, including once by Lenny Curry, chairman of the Republican Party of Florida.

Jackson, meanwhile, was gone by early Wednesday. He slept on the floor of the Capitol Tuesday night as part of the Dream Defenders' sit-in. He left about 6:30 in the morning to catch a flight.

"He was telling different stories and correlating what's going on right now in the movement that we're creating with movements and moments that he's been part of," said the Dream Defenders' Steve Parjett. "He's committed to continuing to help us and continuing to provide support."

Aniston: Justin and I 'already feel married'

Despite her jokes, Jennifer Aniston says she and fiance Justin Theroux aren't rushing to the altar.

If you've stood in a supermarket checkout line lately, you know that the celebrity tabloids are eager to get Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux married -- when they're not breaking the couple up, or falsely claiming Aniston is pregnant.

But don't believe that a wedding date is imminent, Aniston said. "We just want to do it when it's perfect, and we're not rushed, and no one is rushing from a job or rushing to a job," the actress, 44, told the Associated Press on Saturday. "And, you know, we already feel married."

The former "Friends" star was quick to dismiss all the tabloid speculation about her nuptials. "We have yet to set any dates," she said. "There have been no canceled weddings. There have been no postponed weddings. There have been no arguments about where to get married. Just clearing all that up."

She wasn't afraid, however, to joke about her wedding date when she chatted with "Extra" along with "We're the Millers" co-star Jason Sudeikis. "We're racing (to the altar)," she joked. Sudeikis is engaged to actress Olivia Wilde.

But for that race, Aniston may want to start wearing more protective footwear -- or get her fiance to switch to flip-flops. She says Theroux stepped on her toe and broke it. 'Not to out my sweet, sweet fianc?, but he has big feet and wears these boots," she told E! News. "He stepped on my toe. Broke it. I felt it."

Aniston plays a stripper who goes undercover as a suburban mom to help smuggle drugs in "We're the Millers," which opens Aug. 7.

Author's Note

Hi Guys so this is an attempt at a mystery thriller set on a Cyberpunk Mars with a little bit of action thrown in. It?s Cyberpunk because I really need to get the cyberpunk thing out of my system and for some reason I have poor luck with Cyberpunk RPs.

Anyway read and hopefully enjoy.

EDIT: It's pretty sweary and there will be some situations that are a bit dark. Now I'm not suggesting I'm a good enough writer to genuinely offend sensibilities but if you don't like curse words, violence and "dark situations" (I hate describing things as dark but it beats gritty) this one probably isn't for you.

?Chris? You gotta wake up pal, we don?t exactly have all day here.?

Chris Mueller stirred in his sleep before finally opening his eyes.

He had expected to be in bed so was surprised to find himself laying on a sandy beach.

?Where in the hell??

?Chris good to see you. How you feeling??

The man was standing with his back to the sun so he was difficult to identify.

?Who?s that?? Chris asked.

?Oh sorry.? The man said as he stepped out of the sun letting Chris get a good look at him. It was Chris' partner Detective David Kojima.

?Dave. What?re we doing here??

?It was your idea.? Kojima responded, he was wearing a suit and didn?t look ready for a day at the beach. Then Chris realised he too was wearing a suit.

?I don?t remember...? Chris said.

?Look Chris I gotta level with you here because we don?t have a lot of time. I need to know who you were meeting in Schumacher Tenements, earlier today. Do you remember??

?The tenements... in the city??

?Yeah. Who was it? I need the name of your informant.?

?The Tenements... yeah sure of course.? Chris got to his feet and started feeling a little less dopey. ?I was meeting with my CI Ringo. It was about Earth First they got something planned, big terrorist action.?

?Ringo.? Kojima repeated. ?That?s good, what did he tell you??

?Uh... Shit how long ago was this? I?m uh... ha, I?m having trouble remembering.?

?It?s ok Chris, just try to remember what he told you.?

?We met in a room... 17A. It was old. Ringo was already there, he looked like he was tripping on Stims.?

?He was.? Kojima interjected.

?He told me... He told they were bringing in a team, from Earth to do a big job. It?s a massive attack, we?re taking huge casualties.? Chris said as an apparition of himself and Ringo appeared on the sand beside them.

?What?s the target?? Kojima asked as he watched the phantom meeting between Ringo and Chris.

?I asked him that but it was too late.?
Phantom Ringo suddenly collapsed and vanished. Leaving the spectre Chris standing there.

?Aw fuck. I got tagged.? Chris said suddenly realising where he was.

?Yeah man.?

?How bad?? Muller asked.

?This is probably the last time I?ll be seeing you.? Kojima answered honestly.

?Oh Christ. Where?s Karen? The girls??

?They?re on the way. Look Chris I need as much detail as possible... you?re not exactly rich with time here.?

?Goddamn it. Ok.?

The beach melted away and soon Muller and Kojima were standing in Muller?s memory of Room 17A in the Schumacher Tenement. In the middle of the room Phantom Ringo and Muller were standing like statues.

?Ok so I met with Ringo and he told me.?

?They got a team coming over... Heavy hitters outta earth some Illegal Augs too. Say it?s gonna be big.?

?What is the Target?? Phantom Chris asked.

Ringo didn?t even get the words out before he collapsed although this time a body remained while Phantom Chris threw himself against the wall under the window.

?Sniper from the across the street took Ringo out and kept me pinned down. I was about to call for back up when...?
The door to room 17A exploded open in a shower of plastic and what had once been a lock. Standing in the doorway was a very tall man wearing trench coat and holding a shotgun. Phantom Chris turned around but it was too late. A shotgun blast turned his left arm into a red mist. The trench coat fired again but this time the memory stopped just as the Shotgun barrel was flaring. The result was heavily distorted image of the man firing the weapon.

?Guess that was the kill shot. That?s all I can remember, I?m not such good shape out there am I??

?Probably best you don?t remember the next part. You did well to hang in for so long.? Kojima said. ?Let me get a look at this prick.?

?Sure.? Chris said as he recalled the memory of the man who killed him. Kojima knew it wouldn?t be a perfect likeness, Chris hadn?t seen him well enough so what Kojima was actually looking was part memory and part Chris? mind filling in the gaps. For example the man was a foot taller than Kojima which probably wasn?t accurate but given the stress levels Mueller was under when during the creation of the memory it was understandable.

Kojima took a long look at the man?s eyes. Apparently it was the first thing people look at when seeing a face so he assumed the eyes were the most likely feature to be accurate. They were an unnatural shade of blue which suggested the killer had augmented eyes, possibly even replaced.

?So how long I got??

?Don?t know. The Doc?s only let me in to strap the VR rig on you so we could debrief.?

?Right. Just make sure Karen makes it here, alright??

?Of course the Medics got you stabilised, they?ll keep you ticking over. You in any pain??

?Little depersonalised. I guess that?s VR plus Phantom limb, looks like old lefty?s gone.? Chris said as he looked at his simulated left hand.

?Chris I promise you I?ll find this asshole.?

?I know Dave.?

?You want us to load a programme for you??

?Naw Karen will be ere soon and I want to get set up.?

Room 17A faded away and was replaced by the beach again except this time they were standing on a large veranda overlooking the porch. Chris was no longer in his work suit but a Dress Kilt.

?You know I think this was the day I was the happiest I?ve ever been.?

?Chris?? It was a woman?s voice that made both men turn around.

Karen Mueller was standing in her wedding dress exactly how Chris Mueller remembered her.

?Karen.? Chris said as a large smile spread across his face. He turned his head but kept his eyes on his wife. ?Dave if the debrief is over...?

?It?s over Chris.? Kojima?s words didn?t matter though Chris was already walking towards his wife.

?See you partner.? Kojima said as he watched the couple have their first and last dance for a few seconds before pulling himself out of the simulation.

He pinched the bridge of his nose and waited for the vertigo to pass. He always got it after VR. Now he was back in the real world sitting on a crappy chair beside the bedside of a mortally wounded Chris Mueller. Whoever had killed him had delivered had delivered quite a beating after they shot him twice. Mueller?s body was a broken mess or missing limbs and medical tubes.

?Fucking cowards.? Kojima muttered. On the other side of the bed Karen Mueller was connected to a VR rig and holding her husband?s hand. In their shared dream though they were dancing on the sand. Wonders of modern Technology.

Kojima left the room and gave the couple some privacy.

(To Be Continued.)

Woman arrested for defacing Washington's National Cathedral

By Tom Ramstack

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A woman was arrested for allegedly dumping green paint on portions of the National Cathedral on Monday, while police continued to investigate similar acts of vandalism at other monuments in Washington, D.C.

The Episcopal Church cathedral was locked down after the paint was found on the entrance and in two chapels. The unidentified woman was arrested after a police sweep of the premises, the Washington Metropolitan Police Department said.

"An adult female has been arrested for defacing property," police spokeswoman Gwendolyn Crump told Reuters.

Police are investigating whether the woman may have been responsible for defacing the Lincoln Memorial and the Smithsonian Institution in the past week.

A crooked splotch of green paint was discovered on the huge statue of Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial on Friday.

On Monday green paint was found splattered on a statue of Joseph Henry, the first secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. Some of the paint had been scrawled into images that looked like a cross between stick figures and hieroglyphs.

"It's just unfortunate that people could be so disrespectful. It's too bad," said Elisa Rogers, of Ormond Beach, Florida, who was visiting Washington with her family.

Ravens say TE Pitta out for year, sign Shiancoe

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) ? Baltimore Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta is lost for the season after undergoing hip surgery, a major blow to the team's bid to repeat as Super Bowl champions.

Pitta was hurt Saturday, the third day of training camp, when he collided with safety James Ihedigbo in the back of the end zone while going for a pass from Joe Flacco.

He was operated on Saturday night.

"Dennis out for the year," coach John Harbaugh said Sunday. "It's the type of thing that he's not going to be able to come back from this year. There's enough damage in there."

Harbaugh said Baltimore won't know the full extent of Pitta's injury until getting the results of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam. But this much is certain: Pitta won't be part of the team's effort to win back-to-back titles.

Pitta was one of the centerpieces of the Ravens' offense during their run to a Super Bowl championship last season, and he was expected to take on an even bigger role this season after Baltimore traded top wide receiver Anquan Boldin during the spring.

The 28-year old Pitta, a fourth-round pick of the Ravens in 2010, had 61 catches last year, second on the team behind only Boldin. His seven touchdowns ranked second among receivers behind Torrey Smith.

Pitta also had 14 catches for 163 yards and three touchdowns in Baltimore's four playoff games, including four catches for 26 yards in the Ravens' 34-31 Super Bowl win over the San Francisco 49ers.

Visanthe Shiancoe, a 33-year-old free agent, played in only four games last season with New England. But he played in all 16 games in each of the previous nine seasons ? the first four with the New York Giants and the next five with Minnesota.

He has 243 career catches for 2,677 yards and 27 touchdowns.

Shiancoe joined the team for practice Sunday and work Boldin's old number, 81.

Weiner Spent $45,000 To Private Eyes To Investigate His Own Lie That His Twitter Account Had Been Hacked

By Alan with comments July 28, 2013 12:36

The money came out of campaign funds.

Weiner paid T&M Protection Services with his campaign donors? funds and ordered the investigators to track down the ?hackers? who ?broke into his Twitter account? and sent lewd photos.

Weiner?s story about his account being hacked was, of course, a lie and he knew it at the time. For a week and a half, he maintained that he did not send the suggestive pictures posted to his Twitter account in May 2011?

The New York Daily News reports that Weiner hired the private investigators in an attempt to cover his tracks ? spending $43,100 from his campaign warchest on a wild goose chase?

?They?ll be looking into whether someone had my password,? he explained to CNN at the time.

He insisted that the investigators would get to the bottom of the matter and figure out who had attempted to besmirch Weiner?s good name.

US says Israeli-Palestinian talks to start Monday

(AP) ? Israeli and Palestinian negotiators will resume long-stalled direct peace talks on Monday following six months of frenetic shuttle diplomacy by Secretary of State John Kerry.

The State Department announced Sunday that the two sides had accepted invitations from Kerry to come to Washington "to formally resume direct final status negotiations." In a statement, department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the initial meetings would begin Monday evening and continue Tuesday.

She said Kerry had called both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday and said they agreed that the talks would "serve as an opportunity to develop a procedural work plan for how the parties can proceed with the negotiations in the coming months."

"Both leaders have demonstrated a willingness to make difficult decisions that have been instrumental in getting to this point," Kerry said in the statement. "We are grateful for their leadership."

Kerry had announced on July 19 in Amman, Jordan, that negotiators from the two sides would be coming to Washington in a "week or so" after having agreed on a basis for resuming negotiations after a five-year break. However, he warned that the agreement was still being formalized.

Sunday's carefully worded statement offered no details of the framework for the resumption of the talks that broke down five years ago, although both sides' positions are well known.

The statement was released shortly after the Israeli Cabinet agreed to release 104 long-term Palestinian prisoners convicted of deadly attacks, meeting a longstanding Palestinian demand.

Manager of defunct hedge fund pleads guilty to fraud

By Terry Baynes

(Reuters) - A former hedge fund manager pleaded guilty on Friday to defrauding investors in a $12.6 million scheme, more than five years after the fund collapsed under the weight of failed real estate loans.

Lloyd Barriger, who operated Gaffken & Barriger, a Monticello, New York-based investment fund, pleaded guilty in White Plains federal court to charges of securities fraud, mail fraud and conspiracy, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a statement.

Federal prosecutors accused Barriger of bilking more than 70 investors from July 2006 to March 2008 by soliciting millions of dollars for a fund he falsely presented as a safe and liquid investment. He continued to promise investors an 8 percent return, even as the fund defaulted on a $20 million line of credit and held an increasingly delinquent portfolio, according to an indictment filed in February.

"Once again, belief in hedge funds by hopeful investors proved to be sadly misplaced," Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement. "In this case, the perpetrator was not in a sleek Manhattan building but rather in Sullivan County."

Barriger's lawyer, federal defender Mark Gombiner, did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Barriger, 57, of Damascus, Pennsylvania, faces a maximum sentence of 65 years in prison. U.S. District Judge Cathy Seibel, who is overseeing the case, scheduled a sentencing hearing for November 15.

In addition to a prison term, federal prosecutors will seek at least $12.6 million in forfeited assets, representing the proceeds of the charged crimes, the indictment said.

The case is USA v. Barriger, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 11-416.

NBA star's abortion contract uncovered

(The Examiner) J.J. Redick signed an abortion contract with model Vanessa Lopez who used to be his girlfriend. The Orlando Sentinel reports on July 23 that the NBA star had an unusual contract with Lopez. The couple eventually ended their relationship.

The Los Angeles Clippers player dated Vanessa Lopez, but they signed an abortion contract after the model claimed Redick was the father of the child she was expecting. The original document reveals J.J. Redick did not believe the paternity claims. However, the contract asked Lopez to get an abortion in exchange for a year of dating Redick. If the NBA player failed to maintain a relationship with the former model for a year, then he would pay her $25,000.

Union Aviation, Tourism Ministers to be onboard Air India's maiden Dreamliner flight to Australia next month

Dr K Chiranjeevi, Minister of State with Independent Charge for Tourism, Government of India, called upon Ajit Singh, Minister for Civil Aviation, Government of India, and discussed the preparations and a joint campaign strategy, in the run-up to the launch of the Air India?s maiden Dreamliner flight from Delhi to Sydney and Melbourne, on August 29, 2013, a PIB release stated. Both the Ministers are scheduled to travel on Air India?s maiden Dreamliner next month.

The launch of the Dreamliner service could further increase tourist traffic between the two nations as Australia already ranks among the top ten source destinations for inbound tourists to India. The number of Australians visiting India has significantly risen in the last five years, from 1, 35, 925 in 2007 to 1, 86, 002 in 2011. Besides the large Indian diaspora in Australia will also be benefited through this service, added the release.

It may be recalled that Martin Ferguson, former Tourism Minister of? Australia had earlier met Dr Chiranjeevi in December 2012, and had called for direct air connectivity to boost tourism sector between the two countries. At that time Dr Chiranjeevi had expressed his resolve to strengthen Bi-lateral Tourism between both the countries. The launch of the Dreamliner service is a significant step in that direction, the release added.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a long-range, twin-engine jet airliner with far superior flight experience, developed by Boeing. It is said to be the company's most fuel-efficient airliner. According to the release, the launch of the Dreamliner will be a significant development and a feather in the cap of the Indian aviation.

Google invests in maker of Google Glass components

Anthony Quintano / NBC News

Anthony Quintano / NBC News

Google Inc will take a 6.3 percent stake in the unit of Taiwanese chipmaker Himax Technologies Inc that develops display technology for devices such as Google Glass, Himax said.

The investment will help fund the production of liquid crystal on silicon chips and modules used in head-mounted devices such as Google Glass, head-up displays and pico-projectors, Himax said in a statement.

Google, which reported lower-than-expected results last week, is pushing forward with Google Glass, a product which CEO Larry Page has described as vital to the company's future success.

The agreement also allows Google to raise its stake in the unit, Himax Display Inc, to 14.8 percent within a year, Himax said.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

Google Glass, announced in June last year, is a stamp-sized electronic display mounted on the left side of a pair of eyeglass frames that can record video, access messages and retrieve information from the Web.

With this investment, Google will join Intel's Intel Capital Corp, Khosla Ventures I LP and KPCB Holdings as a core shareholder of the chipmaker's unit.

The transaction is expected to close in the current quarter.

Yet Another Chinese Suitor For Fisker: BAIC Kicks The Tires

Fisker Atlantic concept unveiling before New York Auto Show, April 2012

Fisker Atlantic concept unveiling before New York Auto Show, April 2012

Enlarge Photo

We haven't heard much about Fisker Automotive in the last few months.

The company still hasn't declared bankruptcy, it hasn't yet been bought, and it is still apparently in default on its Department of Energy loans.

But now there's a new suitor who's at least kicking the tires.

According to China Daily, the Beijing Automotive group (BAIC) visited Fisker's headquarters in southern California last weekend.

Earlier Chinese suitors who've assessed Fisker--but not closed acquisition deals--include Volvo owner Geely Automotive, and the owner of A123 Systems, Wanxiang, which is China's largest auto-parts maker.

BAIC has little in-house experience with plug-in electric cars, and while electrics are still not selling to cost-conscious Chinese car buyers in any appreciable numbers yet, BAIC sees the writing on the wall.

A BAIC executive said recently that the company would introduce an electric car that would compete with the Tesla Model S in 2015.

That prospect seems like something of a stretch.

Even BYD, which has five years' experience building plug-in vehicles of various sorts, has not yet been able to build a vehicle that could be certified for sale in North America and meet U.S. customer expectations for quality, performance, and safety.

According to the report, BAIC is interested not in the Fisker Karma range-extended electric luxury sedan--of which 2,000 or more were built before production halted a year ago--but Fisker's next model, the smaller Atlantic sport sedan.

The Fisker Atlantic debuted at the 2012 New York Auto Show, but its development almost surely remains to be completed after two years of cash crises, recalls, bad news, and dealer defections for Fisker.

Last fall, the Atlantic was delayed at least to late 2014--and little if anyprogress has likely been made since then.

We may hear more on this in due course.

Or we may not.

At some point Fisker will either get adopted or fade away altogether.

By then, will it matter either way?

Leave us your thoughts in the Comments below.

Iraq: Sunni mosque bombing, other attacks kills 26

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A bomb hidden in an air conditioner that ripped through a Sunni mosque during midday prayers and other attacks killed at least 26 in Iraq on Friday, extending a wave of violence targeting worshippers during the holy month of Ramadan.

Suicide attacks, car bombings and other violence have killed more than 200 people since the Islamic holy month of daytime fasting and charity began last week, according to an Associated Press count.

The violence is an extension of a surge of attacks that has roiled Iraq for months, reviving fears of a return to the widespread sectarian bloodshed that pushed the country to the brink of civil war after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

Most of those killed Friday were slain while performing midday prayers in the packed Abu Bakir al-Sideeq mosque in the town of Wijaihiya, which is about 80 kilometers (50 miles) northeast of Baghdad.

Worshippers and other eyewitnesses said the bomb apparently was planted inside a wall-mounted air conditioning unit to the left of the pulpit. AP television footage of the aftermath showed the interior of the mosque near the bomb site charred black and shrapnel damage peppering the walls. Glass, shoes and other debris littered the blood-soaked red prayer rugs lining the floor.

One of those praying inside, 30-year-old Mohammed Faleh, said the blast struck as male worshippers, including children, were kneeling during communal prayers.

"I stood up to find blood-stained bodies lying on the ground. The Friday prayer turned into a disaster. Whoever left these bombs has no religion," he said.

Faleh said security forces found a second bomb left near the mosque that they rendered safe with a controlled detonation.

Between 250 to 300 people were inside the mosque when the bombing happened, said Sami Dawoud Salman, a member of the local Sahwa, a group of anti-al-Qaida Sunni militiaman that work alongside government security forces. He said the mosque was unguarded and that the local imam had been unsuccessful in getting increased protection.

"I'm asking the government for a solution. There's no security," survivor Jassim Dawoud said. "It's a disastrous situation."

Diyala province, where the attack occurred, was once the site of some of the fiercest fighting between U.S. forces and insurgents in Iraq. It remains a hotbed for terrorist attacks. The area is religiously mixed and witnessed some of the worst atrocities as Shiite militias battled Sunni insurgents for control in the years after the invasion.

"Terrorism is targeting all sects in Diyala mainly by attacking Sunni and Shiite mosques, funerals and football fields to draw the province into a sectarian conflict. All the victims were civilians," said Diyala provincial councilman Sadiq al-Husseini, appealing for calm. "I call on all Diyala residents to show self-restraint."

Police and hospital officials said that at least 22 people were killed and more than 50 were wounded in the mosque blast.

The U.S. Embassy condemned the mosque attack, saying that the fact it struck a place of worship during Ramadan "is especially despicable and cowardly and exposes the nature of those perpetrating these attacks."

Attacks outside the restive city of Mosul, 360 kilometers (225 miles) northwest of Baghdad, claimed four more lives. Two women died when mortar shells landed outside their house in nearby village, and a roadside bomb killed a father and son when it struck their car, authorities said.

The officials provided details of the attacks on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information to media.

The attacks struck as Iran's outgoing president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, wrapped up a two-day trip to Iraq with visits to Shiite Muslim holy cities of Najaf and Karbala south of Baghdad. There was no indication the attacks were related to his trip.

Violence across Iraq has risen sharply since a heavy-handed crackdown by security forces on a Sunni protest camp in the northern town of Hawija on April 23. That raid followed months of rallies by Iraq's minority Sunnis against the Shiite-led government over what they contend is second-class treatment and the unfair use of tough anti-terrorism measures against their sect.

The surge in bloodshed has left more than 2,800 people dead and many more wounded since the start of April.

Attacks on Sunni mosques, for years a relatively rare target in Iraq, have picked up significantly in recent months.

There has been no claim of responsibility for Friday's bombing or many of the other recent attacks.

Sunni extremists such as al-Qaida's Iraq arm that seek to undermine the Shiite-led government are frequently blamed for bombing attacks targeting civilians. They could be behind the Sunni mosque bombings too, hoping to incite a sectarian backlash against Shiites. So could Shiite militias that have been remobilizing following years of relative quiet.
