Kerry urges Iraq to stop arms flow to Syria on Baghdad visit

By Arshad Mohammed

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Secretary of State John Kerry made an unannounced visit to Iraq on Sunday and will urge Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to make sure Iranian flights over Iraq do not carry arms and fighters to Syria, a U.S. official said.

Washington believes such flights and overland transfers take place nearly every day and help Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in his efforts to crush a two-year-old revolt against his rule, said the U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The U.S. official said the Iraqi government had inspected only two flights since last July and that Kerry would argue Iraq did not deserve a role in talks about neighboring Syria's future unless it tried to stop the suspected arms flow.

"He will be very direct with Prime Minister Maliki about the importance of stopping the Iranian overflights and the transits across the territory or, at a minimum, inspecting each of the flights," the official said.

Iraqi officials denied allowing the transfer of weapons from Iran to Syria through Iraqi airspace. Abbas al-Bayati, a member of the Security and Defense parliamentary committee, said: "We have done our duty by randomly inspecting a number of Iranian flights and we did not find any leaked or smuggled weapons."

"If the U.S. is keen to push us to do more they have to give us the information that they have relating to this," he said.

More than a decade after the U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein, Iraq still struggles with insurgents, sectarian friction and political feuds among Shi'ite, Sunni and Kurdish factions who share power in the government of Shi'ite premier Maliki.

Sunni Islamist insurgents linked to al Qaeda and invigorated by the war next door in Syria - where Sunni rebels are battling Assad, an ally of Shi'ite Iran - are regaining ground in Iraq and have stepped up attacks on Shi'ite targets in recent months in an attempt to provoke a wider sectarian confrontation.

Kerry plans to hold talks with representatives of all three communities, including Maliki and Osama al-Nujaifi, the Sunni speaker of parliament.

He will speak by telephone Massoud Barzani, president of Iraq's Kurdish region, whose regional government is pressing ahead with plans to build an oil pipeline to Turkey that Washington fears could lead to the break-up of Iraq.

According to reporters at a picture-taking session at the start of Kerry's talks with Maliki, the U.S. diplomat appeared to joke that Hillary Clinton, his predecessor, had said Iraq would do whatever Washington asked.

"The Secretary told me that you're going to do everything that I say," Kerry said, according to the reporters.

"We won't do it," Maliki, also joking, replied, the reporters said.

SUICIDE BLASTS

In his talks with Maliki, Kerry will also ask the Iraqi prime minister and his cabinet to reconsider a decision to postpone local elections in two Sunni-majority provinces, Anbar and Nineveh, the U.S. official said.

The Iraqi cabinet last week postponed the votes, which were due on April 20, for up to six months because of threats to electoral workers and violence there - a step Washington believes will only increase tensions.

While violence has fallen from the height of the sectarian slaughter that killed tens of thousands in 2006-2007, insurgents have carried out at least one major attack a month since U.S. forces left. Bombings and killings still happen daily, often aimed at Shi'ite areas and local security forces.

More than a dozen car bombs and suicide blasts tore through Shi'ite Muslim districts in the Iraqi capital Baghdad and other areas on Tuesday, killing nearly 60 people on the 10th anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion that ousted Saddam.

Further complicating security, thousands of Sunni protesters have rallied in Anbar against Maliki, whose Shi'ite-led government they accuse of marginalizing their minority sect since the fall of Sunni strongman Saddam.

In his talks with Nujaifi, the speaker of the parliament who has advocated that his fellow Sunnis stay out of the cabinet, Kerry will urge him to deal with Maliki despite Sunni mistrust of the Shi'ite prime minister, the official said.

"It's far preferable for him to engage, no matter what he thinks of Maliki," the U.S. official said.

In Robert A. Heinlein's science-fiction novel, The Cat Who Walks Through Walls, one of the characters states that butterflies are just "self-propelled flowers." While Heinlein's description of the insect's aerodynamic ability is quite poetic, it does little to scientifically explain it. Four Japanese researchers have done a bit better by developing sophisticated numerical simulations of a butterfly's forward flight. In a paper in the American Institute of Physics' journal Physics of Fluids, the researchers describe how they mathematically modeled a butterfly as a four-link rigid-body system consisting of a thorax (the segment of the insect to which the wings are attached), an abdomen, and the two wings.

Using data from observations of butterfly flight in wind tunnels, the researchers conducted three different types of simulations with their model that were defined by the position and attitude of the thorax: tethered (where the thorax is fixed), prescribed (where the thorax is programmed to move in an expected manner) and free-flight (where the thorax movement is unrestricted). They found that their mathematical butterfly did as predicted make use of the tiny, swirling vortices that form in the direction of travel during a downward flap, pushing air down and providing lift. However, they also observed that the flow around the butterfly is much more turbulent than expected. This turbulent flow triggers the complex trajectories characteristic to the flights of butterflies that may be one of the strategies by which the insects avoid predators.

Finally, the researchers determined that the pitching angle of the thorax is the key to controlled periodic flight, noting that living butterflies likely can continually sense the attitude of their thorax and adjust their flapping motion accordingly to ensure stability. The researchers state that their future work will focus on identifying the mechanism by which this control is achieved.

Mom, 2 sons improving after Ala. airport sign fell

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) ? A woman and two of her sons were improving Sunday after being seriously injured when a flight information billboard fell on them at an airport.

A third son was killed Friday when the electronic board, weighing at least 300 pounds, fell from a wall at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.

The boys' mother, Heather Bresette, had broken ankles and a crushed pelvis. She had surgeries over the weekend, but she was still in intensive care and unconscious, University Hospital spokeswoman Nicole Wyatt said.

"She does not know that her baby is dead," the family's priest, the Rev. Don Farnan, said.

The Bresettes, a family of seven, took a weeklong vacation to Destin, Fla., and were about to fly home to Overland Park, Kan., when the arrival-departure sign fell.

Luke Bresette, 10, was killed. His brother, 5-year-old Tyler, suffered a concussion. His 8-year-old brother, Sam, had a broken leg and nose. Tyler was let out of a children's hospital Sunday.

Luke was the middle child of the five. The father, Ryan Bresette, and another son and daughter, were at the airport but not injured.

During their vacation, the family swam in the Gulf of Mexico and Luke went parasailing for the first time.

"His dad said he was thrilled. He was an adventurous kid. He loved sports," said Farnan, a priest at St. Thomas More in Kansas City, Mo.

After the sign fell, it took six people to lift the large board and a dozen people to hold it up while first responders administered aid. Officials were investigating how the sign fell at the newly renovated airport and took down an identical billboard on Saturday.

The renovated concourse opened March 13. It was part of an ongoing $200 million upgrade of Birmingham's airport. The construction began in June 2011 and is being overseen by Brasfield & Gorrie Global Services Group.

The Birmingham-based company said in a statement it was working with airport authorities to determine why the sign fell.

"This is a terrible tragedy that none of us fully understand, and we hope that the family who lost their loved one will find strength through prayer and the support of all of us," the statement said.

At St. Thomas More, hundreds of worshippers showed up for a Saturday morning Mass that usually has about 75 people. Luke's uncle Alex Bresette placed a Rockhurst High School jersey on the altar.

"He would have been in the Class of 2020," he told the Kansas City Star.

Ryan Bresette said in a message on Facebook that words cannot describe the pain the family feels.

In a note to his son, he wrote, "I miss and love Luke so very much. I love you Luke!"

"Ryan is especially grateful for the amazing support of the people in Birmingham. They even started a fund for the family at a bank there," Farnan said. "There are long, loving arms that stretch between Birmingham and Kansas City."

Bern Morley: House renovations are just like planning a wedding.

bern morley The tradesman will not be hot and 5 other universal truths about house reonovations.

Bern Morley

By BERN MORLEY

Perhaps you are thinking about renovating.?Perhaps you?ve outgrown the space that was just GREAT when it was only the two of you but now, with an impending arrival, you?re considering an extension. Perhaps you?ve lost your freaking mind.

That?s why I?m here.

Simply to give you a few pointers as someone who not only has three children, but has also renovated the original money pit.

Our grand plan was this: Buy the worst house in the best street, renovate it, sell it and then do it again ? roughly five more times. I pictured us, mortgage free, able to relax in our late fifties, dining out regularly on our brilliant idea.

Sadly, this hasn?t happened. Mainly because we are completely shit at renovating.

This wasn?t our first renovation but it was certainly our most major and I seriously believe that my husband and I sat down and smoked a massive joint the day we put in an offer on that house because it is the only feasible explanation I can come up with as to why we didn?t see how useless and expensive that house would be make liveable for a family of 5. Or a family of 2 for that matter. To be fair, the market was high, we were panicking and living with my in-laws with three children, one a newborn.

It was like the trifecta of shit decision making.

I think though, we just totally underestimated the scale of the renovation. I had just had a baby and the house was dazzling us with its orange shag pile carpet, non-existent cupboard space and vicinity to the?water.

I liken the process of renovating to getting married.

Hear me out.

Renovating 290x385 The tradesman will not be hot and 5 other universal truths about house reonovations.

Renovating is like getting married.

From the moment we set a date for our wedding, it was on. And I mean ? on. Every Saturday and Sunday was taken up with visits to bridal shops, hotels, expos, beachside locations, travel agents, cake makers, balloon shops and yeah, you get the picture, it was weddings a go go.

Then the wedding came and went. It had been a full scale military exercise to bring that day together, not to mention, squeeze into my dress and then, poof, it was all over. I was bereft and cast adrift on my Saturdays. What now? Spend actual time with my new husband?

And money, Jesus don?t get me started on the so called ?budget?. Please read that and make the stupid quotation marks above your head as you do, because the sentence is pure bullshit.

The thing is, my husband actually does a hell of a lot of the renovating himself and we still leaked cash like a kid with full blown?gastro. Plus we just had such different ideas on what needed to be done and at what cost.

So:? Here are a few tips from someone who?s been blinded by the light and no longer sees rainbows.

1. Unless you freakishly agree on everything in your lives, you can expect at least one conversation where you will tell your partner to shove a particular tool/apparatus up their arse. This is almost guaranteed.

2. Never ever, ever, ever, ever, buy a house with only one toilet.? I don?t care who you are, how many children you have, one toilet is never enough. One toilet, 5 people, you do the math. Not a day went by that that thing wasn?t double booked.

3. Forget the hot tradesman fantasy.?Just forget it.?There will be no Desperate Housewives scenario where the hot Latino guy wants to have his way with you on the freshly laid tiles. Reality: He will be an old fat hairy guy that turns up too early or not at all.

4. Do not try and do it yourself.? No, you are not a plasterer, okay?? You also do not know how to put up a fence by yourself. Or install a gas oven, or for that matter, transplant a kidney. Leave it to the experts. I cannot stress this enough.

5. Borrow more money than you think.? Seriously.? Whatever you think it is going to cost, double it.? We had huge ideas about what we would do with that place. Then we got a few quotes.?Even though we were lucky enough to do a lot of it ourselves, the compounding costs just blew us into next week. And the week after that. And the decade after that.

6. Get used to going to bed with the shits with your partner.? Our worst day was the white on white day.? Let me explain.? We both decided the roof colour and the house render colour.?We did the colour test and it looked tops.?So the day we both arrived home from work at the same time and found we lived in a Greek Palace, aka white on white, we both got ridiculously angry at one another. To be fair, this was just compounded by the fact we had gotten the bill for the addition which was double what we had been quoted and I was more than likely sick of having to play toilet roulette.

Annoying renovations 290x385 The tradesman will not be hot and 5 other universal truths about house reonovations.

.

So my analogy of marriage and renovating a house I guess is this: Every single spare moment you have will be taken up with this new project, to make the seemingly impossible, possible. The project itself will change but the passion and effort will still be much the same.

Will we renovate again?? Ooooh, let me think, did I enjoy living with mould, asbestos, lead paint and one toilet to share between five???Let?s just say I?d rather paper cut my own eyeball with a ream of Reflex than attempt this again, so that?s a solid no. But be sure to ask me in another 2 years. When, just like childbirth, I forget the pain.

Bern is a Gen X, child of the 80?s. Kept busy being a working mother of 3 children, one with Aspergers, renovating the original money pit and drinking too many coffees in the space of 24 hours.

One day she?ll remember to leave the meat out for tea but until then she writes beautiful and amusing posts on her blog which you can find?here. You can also follow her on Twitter here.

Do you have any great renovation stories? Would you do it again?

a gentle palette for french family living - My French Country Home

I love the gentle colour of old stone.? The fa?ade of this house, is typical of old houses in our part of the world.? A colour that is never aggressive, that is happy to fit in and blend to its surroundings; a colour that is modest enough to serve as a backdrop to stronger hues, ? yet has the character to take centre stage when required.

?A couple of pictures from a family home in Normandy.? The way we like them.? No bling bling, no unrealistic styling, simple country living, relaxed and comfortable.

Wishing you all a comfortable, relaxed and family weekend!
