9th-12th Grade Retreat: A Jewish View of Love, Sex & Relationships

On May 4-6, Temple Judea will once again host A Jewish View of Love, Sex & Relationships, an innovative and important weekend retreat for high school students.

A Jewish View of Love, Sex & Relationships is designed to help our teenagers understand Judaism's beliefs and traditions about sexuality and relationships. ?This unique retreat experience will provide opportunities for teens to obtain clear and accurate information pertaining to sexuality and relationships. ?The program is designed to promote positive attitudes, to help teens understand Judaism's approach to sexuality and to clarify values in order to make responsible decisions about sex and relationships.

The structure and content of the weekend encourages honest answers to questions and provides our teens with resources and a Jewish context from which they can openly explore these challenging topics. ?It is our goal that our weekend together will help our teenagers grow into responsible young adults who ground their decisions in factual information and Jewish tradition.

Dr. Charles Miraon and Amy Miron, M.S., two nationally acclaimed experts in Teen Sexuality, along with trained faculty members and educators from Temple Judea, will once again facilitate the weekend. ?The Mirons have more than 20 years of experience leading this program for synagogues and other organizations and are the co-authors of the book, How to Talk with Teens about Love, Relationships and S-E-X: A Guide for Parents.

All of our prior sexuality retreats, according to teens who attended (and their parents), had a profound impact on this critical aspect of teenage life. ?We look forward to your child participating this year.

The Talmud teachers that a parent is obligated to teach their child three things in life: to teach them Torah, to teach them a trade and to teach them how to swim. "Why teach them how to swim?" the Rabbis ask? ?The answer from our tradition is, "that one day their life may depend on it!" ?In the sexually charged world that our teens live in today, to teach a child how to swim is to teach t hem to make responsible and informed choices about love, sex and relationships, for indeed their lives mentally and physically do depend on it.

With this in mind, we invite parents to an informational meeting about our sexuality retreat which is happening:

Tuesday, March 27, 2012 from 6:00 - 7:00 PM at Temple Judea (RSVP by clicking here)

The Love, Sex & Relationships Retreat will be held in May on the Brandeis-Bardin Campus.

The registration form for this weekend should be submitted online no later than Sunday, April 15, 2012. ?Spots are available on a first come, first served basis. ?The cost for this retreat is $150 per student.

Once registered, please plan to join us for a parents only pre-retreat meeting at Temple Judea on Thursday, May 3 at 7:30 PM. ?This meeting is for parents of students who will attend the retreat.

Parents are also asked to join the retreat on Sunday, May 6th for a special parent-child session at 10:45 AM at Brandeis. ?This will provide parents with additional information regarding what teenagers and facilitators discussed throughout the weekend. ?The weekend will end around "noon-ish" for both you and your teenager.

Directions to Brandeis (in Simi Valley) will be given at the meetings. ?Please arrange carpools for transportatino to Brandeis. ?The Thursday (at Temple Judea) and the Sunday (at Brandeis) sessions are an integral part of the weekend for your family and it's important that parents participate in both sessions.

A Jewish View of Love, Sex & Relationships was created as a result of a donation from the Steve Fuld Memorial Fund and is now supported by a generous donation by Cindy and Sandy Sigal. ?The retreat is open to all 9th - 12th graders who haven't previously taken part in this program, including teenagers who are not enrolled in our Religious School program but who are members of Temple Judea. ?Subsidies are available for those in need. ?Please contact Rabbi Raff at (818)342-3177 to discuss the options.

Please click here to register your child for the retreat.

If you have any other questions about the retreat, please call the Religious School Office at (818) 342-3177.
